Rabun to host regional and state tourneys
By David Hunter Staff Writer
In the next couple of weeks, recreation basketball teams will be participating in regional and state tournaments.
During the next two weeks, the Rabun County Recreation Department will be the headquarters of the best area 12-and-under girls All-Star basketball action.
Beginning Feb. 22, Rabun will host the District 7 Class C 12-and-under girls tournament. The Rabun County 12-and-under All-Stars will play at 6 p.m. against Towns County in the first round.
Head coach Jeff Reeves said he was glad the team doesn't have to travel and was excited about being the host team.
“We want everybody to come out and see us play,” Reeves said. “We are going to do the best we can.”
The finals will take place at 2:30 p.m. Feb. 24 at the recreation department.
Because it is the host team, the 12-and-under All-Star squad will receive an automatic bid to the state tournament regardless of how they fare during district action. The state tournament will be held Mar. 2-3
Department Athletic Director Roy Quilliams said he was honored that Rabun was hosting the tournaments.
“We get to show off our facilities and the progression of the youth basketball program,” Quilliams said.
In preparing for the added publicity, Quilliams said the recreation department will have the backboards and floors cleaned before the teams hit the court.
He said since the gym is relatively new, and the staff all ready works hard to keep it clean, no major work will be required.
Other All-Star teams will hit the road next week.
Upcoming games include:
€ 10-and-under boys team plays at 7:15 p.m. Feb. 23 at White County against Lumpkin County.
€ 10-and-under girls team plays at 7:15 p.m. Feb. 23 at Jefferson County against Commerce.
€ 12-and-under boys team plays at 6 p.m. Feb. 22 at Union County against Lumpkin County.
