The Rabun County Wildcat baseball team lost two out of three games this week, but the one victory seemingly served as payback against its rival Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School.

The 'Cats lost 14-9 on Monday at home to White County. On Friday, the 'Cats won their first game of the season 13-3 at Rabun Gap, but fell 14-5 on March 7 at home against West Oak (S.C.).

In action on Monday, the 'Cats were down five runs heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. Rabun, however, clawed back into the game with six runs.

Sophomore Jim Bob Carver started the rally with a single. Freshman Daniel Campbell doubled, and fellow freshman Paul Blackstock tripled, which brought in Carver and Campbell. Senior Kyle McClellan singled, and a White County error scored Blackstock.

Seniors Justin Snow and Kris Conner singled, and McClellan scored. The final two runs came off the bat of sophomore Will Wilcox, who brought in Conner and Snow.

The 'Cats led 8-7 heading into the final frame.

The White County bats came to life in the top of the seventh, torching the 'Cats with seven runs.

Snow doubled in the bottom of the seventh. The hit would have scored two runs, but the runner failed to tag home, creating the final out of the game.

“I was pleased with the effort, and we didn't quit when we were behind,” head coach Mark Wilcox said.

Despite losing its first game against Rabun Gap on March 6, the 'Cats offense exploded early Friday, ripping off eight runs in the top of the fourth.

Blackstock tripled to begin the inning. McClellan, Snow and Conner walked to score Blackstock. McClellan then scored on a passed ball. Will Wilcox brought home two more runs off a single.

Junior Daniel Amick doubled down the third-base line to score Wilcox. Pinch-runner Tim Thompson scored off Campbell's double. Campbell later scored on a single by Blackstock, and Blackstock scored on a Rabun Gap error.

After Rabun Gap closed the gap to 10-3, the 'Cats added three more runs in the top of the fifth.

The game was called after five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

“It was great. I enjoyed it, and it was fun” Will Wilcox said of the first victory of the season.

Carver was the winning pitcher for the 'Cats.

“He did really well. He didn't throw a lot of pitches because of the short innings,” Mark Wilcox said.

The 'Cats play at 5 p.m. today at Union County.

In other action, the junior varsity Wildcats on Saturday split a doubleheader at home against West Oak (S.C.). The 'Cats won the first game 6-3 and lost the second one 4-1.

The junior varsity team played Wednesday at Rabun Gap.
