Some of the Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School Eagles baseball team's grandest achievements belong to senior Brian Vollmer.

Vollmer, who has been in the program since he was in the sixth grade and has been a team captain since his sophomore year, gave up only 26 runs in 2006. The season year before, he pitched 62 1/3 innings, fanned 85 batters and earned a 1.68 ERA from the mound.

“A big part of my success has been head coach Jason Grove,” Vollmer said. “He has been like a second father to me.”

“My teammates have inspired me, and a lot of it has been luck,” Vollmer added.

Currently, two colleges, Gardner-Webb University and Charleston Southern University, have expressed interest in recruiting him.

He said picking a school has made for some stressful decision making.

Besides the numerous pitching records he has set at the school, Vollmer has also been an able fielder in key situations on defense

"He has pitched in every big game the program has ever had,” Grove said.

An example came during his freshman year when the Eagles managed to knock off Social Circle in the playoffs with a 4-3 win, Grove said.

The following year, Vollmer pitched the Eagles to a 4-3 victory against Westchester Academy in a home playoff game.

This season, he pitched a one-hitter March 6 with 11 strikeouts during a 10-0 win at Rabun County High School.

“It was great, especially during my senior year,” Vollmer said. “It's been a fun competition between the schools.”

One of Vollmer's opponents that night was Rabun County senior Kris Conner, the pitcher's long-time friend.

Vollmer and Conner know each other well from their time playing recreation baseball growing up.

The players have turned into friendly rivals in high school.

“I smile every time he gets up to bat,” Vollmer said.

During his sophomore year, Conner once hit a home run off Vollmer.

“His off-speed stuff is the best I have ever seen,” Conner said.

Grove said he would like to have eight Vollmers.

Off the field, Vollmer said he has learned a lot about time management at Rabun Gap.

Academically, he plans to major in business administration.

“I have to remember there are going to be bigger and better players, so Coach Grove wants me to stay humble,” Vollmer said.
