Morris Brown

Morris Brown, 87, of Dillard, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008, in Greenville, S.C.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was an educator at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School for 41 years, serving as headmaster, principal, teacher, coach and dorm parent. He attended North Georgia College and received his undergraduate degree from Piedmont College, a master's degree from Appalachian State University, an administration certificate from Emory University and a sixth-year degree from the University of Georgia. He also pursued further mathematical studies at Colorado State University, San Diego State University and Franklin & Marshall College.

He was a former member of the Rabun County Lions Club. He also volunteered for Sharing & Caring of Rabun County. He received many civic and educational honors. He was a member of Head of Tennessee Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for 50 years. He also served many years as a Sunday school teacher and as treasurer.

He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, John Floyd.


Survivors include: his wife of 61 years, Genelle Brewer Brown; two daughters and a son-in-law, Sharon Floyd of Spartanburg, S.C., and Jan and Olin "Sandy" Bonner of Greenville; four grandchildren, Michael Floyd and wife Geri and Meredith York and husband Paul, all of Augusta; Blake Bonner of Greenville and Jill Farr and husband Nicholas of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and two great-granddaughters.

Beck Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to Head of Tennessee Baptist Church or Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School.
