" I am glad that someone is finally asking this question. I have had an opinion on this matter for a long time and would be pleased to get it out in public.
1.) Rabun County needs to move away from the "motel culture" and toward the "Bed & Breakfast culture." The problem with motels is that they are not a place to stay, they are only a place to sleep. Once you sleep there, you are in a hurry to pack up and move on. If you stay in someone's home and eat a meal with them and the meal is made from locally grown produce, they are a guest and not just a customer. Step 1, a moratorium on new motels coupled with incentives to establish B&Bs.
2.) Turn the Dillard Farmers Market back into a farmers market and get rid of the flea market wares. There is already a flea market in the county.
3.) Spend the money to move all of the stores in Dillard onto one side of the street. This will create the right atmosphere for shopping.
4.) Extend the "railroad" all the way up to the shopping area. This is a unique feature that should be exploited and promoted.
There are tons of other things that can be done. However, if Rabun County wants to be a tourist destination, it needs to offer more charm than a Super Wal-Mart and Home Depot. "
