Lady 'Cats win big against Towns

The Rabun County Lady Wildcats finally got back into the win column as they walloped Towns County on Tuesday by a score of 9-1.

The Lady 'Cats' bats threw sparks as the team scored nearly twice as many runs as in the previous two games combined.

On Monday, Rabun fell to Union by a score of 11-1 and on Sept. 4, Banks edged the Lady 'Cats in nine innings by a score of 5-4.

During the Towns game, Rabun (2-4 overall and 0-3 Region 8AA) piled on three runs in the third inning and six runs in the following frame before the game was called after Towns failed to narrow the Rabun lead in the fifth.

"We hit the ball well and finally started running the bases well," head coach April Welch said.

Junior pitcher Marina DeFoor got the hit party started in the third with an RBI-single to tie the game at one run apiece. On the mound, DeFoor kept the Towns batters at bay until the Rabun offense could build a lead.

In the fourth inning, junior Brooklyn Ellenburg broke out of a hitting slump with a hot shot RBI-double sent all the way to the outfield fence. The hit scored senior Amanda McGahee to make the score 4-1.

Ellenburg added to the lead after she beat a rundown at the plate. Senior Jennifer Savage, juniors O'Neil York, Jessica King and Alex Owens would also score.

Senior Emily Scott rounded out the inning with an RBI-single, leaving the lead at 9-1 when the dust had cleared.

After Towns could not decrease the eight-run lead, the game was called in the fifth inning.

During last week's game against Banks, Savage was credited by coaches for a spectacular catch in center field.

With two runners on in the ninth inning, Savage covered an extraordinary amount of ground to make a behind-the-back catch in the outfield. Keeping her presence of mind, Savage then threw out the runner at second base for the double play.

"Savage had one of the best catches I've seen in a very long time," assistant coach Julie Fletcher said.

Rabun will try to get back into the region competition today as the team travels to North Oconee High School for a 5:30 p.m first pitch.
