Things to Do: Scenic Drives

Published:

Highway 76 winds east/west through breath-taking mountain scenery. Fortunately for Rabun County, some fantastic views are available here.

Some of the best viewing spots are off the main highway. The list below gives you several viewing options.

Tate City

A two-hour trip offering great views and trout streams.

Directions - From Clayton, head west on Highway 76 West about eight miles, turning right onto Persimmon Road (at the Tallulah-Persimmon Fire Department). Continue about four miles, turning left onto Tallulah River Road. After about six miles, Tate City begins where the road opens up in a spectacular valley.

Popcorn Overlook

An easy place to go for a good view.

Directions - From Clayton, head west on Highway 76 about 12 miles. The overlook is on the right side.

Sky Valley

A winding road with an overlook and a view of Estatoah Falls.

Directions - From Clayton, take Highway 441 North to Dillard. Turn right onto Highway 246. Along the way, Estatoah Falls can been seen flowing over a large rock.

Patterson Gap

Offers valleys, waterfalls, streams and hunting on a gravel road.

Directions - From Clayton, take Highway 76 West about eight miles to Persimmon Road. Continue on Persimmon Road, which eventually turns into Patterson Gap Road near where the asphalt turns to gravel. Continue on Patterson Gap Road down through Moon Valley to Betty's Creek Road, which leads to Dillard.

Glassy Mountain

Offers views of lakes and numerous mountains.

Directions - From Clayton, head south on Highway 441 about three miles to Tiger Connector. Take that into Tiger, continuing through a four-way stop as the road becomes Bridge Creek Road. Drive west about four more miles and turn right onto Glassy Mountain Road (Forest Service Road 11). A two-mile drive up the gravel road takes you to the mountain top.

Appalachian Trail

Views of Lake Burton, North Carolina mountains and the Appalachian Trail.

Directions - From Clayton take Highway 76 West for 18 miles to Dick's Creek Gap, at the Towns County line. The Appalachian Trail crosses the highway.

Tuckaluge Road

A loop on gravel roads that travels over Dan Gap and reaches altitudes of nearly 3,000 feet.

Directions - From Clayton, head east on Warwoman Road and turn left onto Tuckaluge Road (just past Antioch Methodist Church). After about two miles, go right at the fork, which turns into Dan Gap Road. Continue as the road turns into Walnut Fork Road and Sarah's Creek Road.

Satolah

Because the route is on low roads, it doesn't offer panoramic views. But one can take in views of mountains up close on an extremely twisty road.

Directions - From Clayton, head east on Warwoman Road, which dead ends at Highway 28. Continue on Highway 28 North.

" Great article...my wife and I live down in Oakwood and we do quite a bit of traveling around NE GA. There are some fantastic roadtrips with lots to do and some great food along the way - we often wonder why more people don't take advantage of our area like this. "

" Reading the Things To Do has been a tremendous help in learning about the area. I live in northeast Florida and would like to vacation in Clayton to take in the views of the waterfalls, streams and mountains. Not to mention, just breathe in the mountain air. Now if I could just find a Web site that offers vacation rentals up that way ... I could take advantage of visiting your area. "

" I visit Rabun County once yearly, and travel the surrounding areas. Beautiful !
We like to take our jeeps on the unimproved mountain roads..with a GPS, maps, hatchett, hand saw, jack, axe, and various other 'survival' items we have been to some truely hard to find places -priceless views and memories. "

" Don't forget about:

1. Chatooga River - play in the river or hike the beautiful trail - take 76 east about 6 miles from Clayton to the SC border.

2. Black Rock Mountain State Park - Awsome views in the fall, winter and early spring.

3. Drive around Lake Rabun - nothing else like it in the world, you'll see some beautifully restored wooden ski boats and beautiful Lake Rabun.

4. If fresh, locally grown produce is what you like (I sure do!), then check out: Osage Farms Agency & Tomlin’s Barbeque off of 441 in Rabun Gap and Hillside Orchard Farms in Tiger off of old 441. Just picked 5 lbs. of very ripe fresh black berries there a week ago. They have a neat corn maze in the fall.

5. Everyone has heard of the Dillard House, but check out their stables - you won't find prettier trail rides anywhere.

I am constantly discovering new fun things to do and see in Rabun County. Awsome place! "
