Donald “Donnie” C. Holt, 84 of Clayton, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2022, at his residence. He was the husband of Jewell Mason Holt, married for 62 years.

Born in Rabun County on Feb.13, 1937, he was the son of the late John Holt and Ethel Hunnicutt Holt. He spent his life in Rabun County, where he owned and operated the Clayton Shell Station & BP gas station in Clayton for over forty years. He was also a veteran of the United States Army, he served from 1955-1958, three years active duty and three years reserves.

He coached little league football and baseball and loved working with kids, also loved the game of golf and he retired from Rabun County Golf Course in 2017. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion and was also of the Baptist faith. He loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ethel Holt; grandson, Dakota Holt; great-grandson Phoenix Jones; brothers, Fred Holt, Morris Holt, Jimmy Holt and Bill Holt; and three sisters, Elise Keener, Iris Patterson and Dorothy Forrester.

He is survived by his wife, Jewell Mason Holt of the home; two sons, Richard and Janet Holt of Tiger, and Russell and Laurie Holt of Leesville, LA; daughter, Pam and Brian Kilby of Clayton; and by three sisters, Janie and Lenwood Dotson of Easley, SC, Susie and Welburn Fulbright of Greenville, SC and Mildred Earwood of Columbia, SC. Thirteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren also survive.

The body is at Hunter Funeral Home where the family received friends Saturday Jan. 8, 2022 from noon until 2:00 p.m., followed by a graveside service at Rabun Memory Park Tiger, GA. with Rev. Lenwood Dotson officiating. Due to the Covid- 19 pandemic, we asked everyone attending to please wear face masks and to practice social distancing.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in his honor to a charity of one’s choice or to one’s favorite charity.

The family is at the home on Holt Lane in Clayton.
