J.P. ‘Pick’ Speed

J.P. “Pick” Speed, 80, of the Warwoman community passed away Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2011 at his residence.

He was born in Clayton to Marlor Calvin Speed Sr. and Amanda Norton Speed.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: a son, Donny Ray Speed; a brother, Donald Speed; and a sister, Helen Speed.

J.P. is survived by: his loving wife of 61 years, Mary Grace Cobb Speed of the Warwoman community; three sons, James Speed and wife Gail, Johnny Speed and Mike Speed; two daughters, Debbie Page and husband Raymond and Judy O’Shields and husband Jeff; four brothers, Marlor Calvin Speed Jr., Noah Melvin Speed, Netherland Speed and Milton Speed; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was a backsizer operator for Burlington Industries and also worked for Pontiac Motors, James Lee & Sons, Black Rock Mountain State Park, Dover & White Drug, A.I.D. Corporation, Rabun County Road Department, Rabun County Schools (bus driver), Gulf Life Insurance Company (salesman), Westmoreland Constructions and was a farmer.

J.P. was an active member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and was a caring and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a wonderful friend to have.

Funeral services were held Friday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with the Revs. Mickey Woods and Raymond Page officiating. Burial followed at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
