James Paul Wooten, 85, of Clayton, passed away Thursday, June 5, 2014, at his residence.

He was born in Franklin, N.C., to the late Charlie Washington Wooten and Ruth Jane Brown Wooten.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: his loving wife, Helen Jones Wooten in 1994; two brothers, Fred Wooten and Neville Wooten; a sister, Sue Wooten Roper; a brother-in-law, Leonard Jones; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Ethel Fox Jones and James Leonard Jones.

Mr. Wooten is survived by: two sons, Dennis Paul Wooten and wife Carolyn of Creedmoor, N.C., and Douglas Edward “Eddie” Wooten and wife Anita of Knoxville, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Kristin Peebles, Matthew Wooten, Hope Wooten and Paul Wooten; a great-grandchild, Madison Peebles; a loving friend, Betty McKay of Franklin; a brother, Bruce Wooten of Franklin; three sisters, Catherine Ray, Shirley Shuler and Agnes Tardy, all of Franklin; six sisters-in-law, Ruby Cabe of Franklin, Annie Nell Crowe of Elizabethton, Tenn., Mildred Conner of Brevard, N.C., Christine Swanson of Locust, N.C., and Evelyn Sheffield and Bessie Cogdill, both of Sylva, N.C.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was employed by Western Carolina Telephone Company and worked for Contel for over 37 years. He also served on the Clayton Housing Authority board and was a faithful member of Clayton Church of God.

Funeral services were held Sunday in the Beck Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Bryan Alexander, James Pendrey and Clark Sheffield officiating. Burial followed at Clarkes Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery, 1999 Chapel Road, Franklin, NC 28734.
