Jeanette Aileen “Sam” Brooks Barnette, 82, of St. Marys, passed away Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013.

She was born Jan. 10, 1931, in Schenectady, N.Y., to the late Fred R. and Ruth A. Swartz Brooks. “Sam,” as she is affectionally known, was a person who loved life and all its experiences. Professionally she was a practicing registered nurse for many years, most of which was spent at the Old Beaches Hospital as a nursing supervisor. To fulfill one of her dreams, she gave it up and returned to the University of Florida for a bachelor’s degree in nursing. As an adventurism person, Sam was a certified open water diver, an accomplished snow skier, a competitive tennis player, a friendly bridge player, as well as a constant traveler. She loved to travel in her RV as far north as Alaska and south to Key West, Fla.. But most of all, she loved her home in the north Georgia mountains. Every year she was anxious to go and did until she couldn’t keep it up. She was a member of Dillard United Methodist Church and attended Kingsland United Methodist Church.

Survivors include: her loving husband of 62 years, Eugene W. Barnette of St. Marys; and devoted sons, Eugene Barnette Jr. (Cheryl), Michael A. Barnette (Evelyn), Jack T. Barnette (Shelia), David L. Barnette (Kim) and Rodney S. Barnette (Beth). As a grandmother of six, and a great-grandmother of two, she regretted being unable to give as much love and time as she wanted due to the various locations that were involved.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Kingsland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Chip Strickland officiating.

Private family services and inurnment will be held at the Jacksonville (Fla.) National Cemetery.

Allison Memorial Chapel in St. Marys is in charge of arrangements.
