Adilene McCall Penland, 89, of Clayton, affectionately known as “Addie,” died Tuesday morning Sept. 11, 2012, at her residence.

She was born April 15, 1923, in Macon County, N.C., to the late Thomas Elijah McCall and Sarah Jane Owens McCall. She was the widow of Claude Penland, who died in 1980. She was employed at Burlington in the textile industry for a number of years and was a greeter at Walmart for nine years until retirement at age 85. She was a member of the Head of Tennessee Baptist Church, where she was also a member of the Woman’s Missionary Union. She was the last member of her immediate family.

She is survived by: two sons and their spouses, Charles and Lana Gale Penland of Tiger and Mike and Audrey Penland of Lakemont; two daughters and their spouses, Jane Hollifield and husband James Friedman of Clayton and Deborah and Don Johnson of Blairsville; seven grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Frances McCall of Otto, N.C.

Funeral services were held Sept. 13 at Head of Tennessee Baptist Church with the Revs. Richard Daley and Danny Cannon officiating. Burial followed at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Franklin, N.C.
