Donald Russell Bourne, 87, of Lakemont, passed away Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, at his residence. He was the son of William Ather Bourne and Addie Maxwell Polk Bourne.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: a son, Albert Russell Bourne; three brothers, Bill Bourne, Kenneth Bourne and Lynn Bourne; and a sister, Catherine Freeman.

Mr. Bourne is survived by: his loving wife, Nell Patrick Kirkland Bourne; two sons, David William Bourne and wife Sharon of Watkinsville and Richard Alvin Bourne Sr. and wife Anne of Thomson; a daughter, Patricia Irene Bourne of Athens; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was born in Franklin County, Miss., and moved to Athens to live with his mother’s brother and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. N.T. Polk, at the age of 7. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, and he retired from Georgia Power, where he worked as a lineman. He was a Georgia Power Ambassador for the Athens and Northeast Georgia regions, was very active in the Lions Club for many years and was a volunteer fireman and EMT in Greene County. He did volunteer work at Tallulah Gorge State Park from the time the Jane Hurt Yarn Interpretive Center was built until 2011. He was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. He sang in the church choir until his hearing prevented him from doing so. He was a member of Tiger United Methodist Church.

Funeral services were held Sunday at Tiger United Methodist Church with the Rev. James Turpen officiating. A graveside service was held Monday at Johnson United Methodist Church Cemetery in Watkinsville.

Memorial donations may be made to Tiger United Methodist Church or to Johnson United Methodist Church.
