Frances Rose Burrell Norton, 98, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013.

She was born April 23, 1914, and grew up in Rabun County on the family farm near Dillard. She married Jay Norton in 1934, and in 1937 moved to Wyoming with her husband and toddler. After 40 years in Wyoming, she and her husband moved back to the Betty’s Creek community, where they spent their retirement years gardening and associating with their family and friends.

She was preceded in death by: daughters Romona Jean Norton in 1938 and Nancy Rebecca Davies in 2005; and her husband, Jay F. Norton in 1994.

She is survived by: a daughter, Lois Norton Gilbert of Otto; a brother, Frank Burrell of Douglas; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.

A memorial service was held Jan. 6 at Betty’s Creek Baptist Church with officiating by the Rev. Ronia Hunter and Mickey Justice. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to Betty’s Creek Baptist Church, 464 Big Creek Road, Otto, NC 28763.
