Stanley E. “Butch” Darnell, 64, of Rabun Gap, passed away Friday, June 21, 2013, at his residence.

He was born Dec. 5, 1948, in Clayton to the late Hubert High and Ruth Norton Darnell.

He is survived by: his loving wife, Kay Duvall Darnell; two sons, L. Allyn Stockton Jr. of Clayton and Rob and Sherrie Stockton of Tiger; a brother, Hubert Darnell and wife Beatrice of Rabun Gap; a sister, Pat and Andy Ketterson of Omaha, Neb.; four grandchildren, L.A. “Lane” Stockton III, Meredith Stockton, Georgia Stockton and Gunner Stockton; a niece, Hilary Ketterson of Denver; a nephew, Andrew Ketterson of Omaha; a great-niece, Milee Ketterson; and a great-nephew, Drew Ketterson.

Butch graduated from Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School, attained an associate’s degree from Abraham Baldwin Agriculture College, graduated magna cum laude, Eta Gamma Sigma with a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Georgia Terry College of Business and earned a master’s degree in educational leadership from Clemson University. He attended Oxford University in Oxford, England.

He owned Darnell’s Grocery Store in Dillard. Butch was business manager and head of upper school as well as assistant to the headmaster at RGNS and was associated with Martin Capital. He also was active in many community service projects, including Leadership Georgia Class of 1992 and past president of Rabun County Chamber of Commerce. He served two terms on Dillard City Council and was a member of the Clayton-Rabun County Water and Sewer Authority and the Dillard Merchants Association. He served two terms as president of the North Georgia Technical College Foundation Board and on the Georgia Department of Agriculture Advisory Committee, the Foxfire Fund, Rhapsody in Rabun and currently was chairman of the Rabun County Board of Commissioners. He was a member of Betty’s Creek Baptist Church. He also faithfully attended Clayton First United Methodist Church and taught preschool Sunday school classes.

The family received friends Sunday at Beck Funeral Home. A celebration of his life was held Monday at the Rearden Theater at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School with the Revs. Charlie Green and Jeremy Nofsinger officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to the Butch Darnell Memorial Fund, in care of United Community Bank, P.O. Box 1250. Clayton, GA 30525, to benefit Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School.
