Joseph Horace “Papa Joe” Cannon, 69, of Rabun Gap died of cancer Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, at Northeast Georgia Medical.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force who served in the Vietnam War.

He is survived by: his sister, Blanch Smotherman of Ellington, Mo.; three children, Marshall Cannon of Mountain Rest, S.C., Tia Gibson of Ellington, Mo., and Cher Monroe; three adopted children, Keri, Jessie and Jeremy Cannon, all of Rabun Gap; five grandchildren, R.J. Martin, Dalton Martin and Alexis Gibson, all of Ellington, and Cody and Emily Cannon, both of Mountain Rest.

Per his request, he will be cremated and buried in Plant City, Fla., on a family plot. Condolences can be sent to: Marshall Cannon, 6825 Highlands Highway, Mountain Rest, SC 29664; or to Marshall Cannon at Jim’s Service Center in Mountain City.
