Joseph Ervin Foster, 95, of Burnsville, N.C., passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at Mountain Manor Assisted Living.

A native of York, S.C., he was a son of the late John and Bessie Branch Foster and husband of 65 years to the late Stella L. Silva Foster. He also was preceded in death by: a son, Peter Foster; a sister, Clara Mae Carroll; and brothers, Marion and Harold Foster.

After serving his country as a radio engineer with the Merchant Marines, Joseph was owner and operator of his own restaurant, El Gordo’s, in St. Petersburg, Fla., where he served thousands including professional ball players and professional family members.

A resident of Scaly Mountain, N.C., since 1976, he served as a parishioner at St. Helena Catholic Church and also as a choir member and lead singer. Joseph also taught English for many years to Hispanic immigrants.

Surviving are: his daughters, Teresa Foster of Burnsville and Felice Foster of Elon, N.C.; a son, Justin Foster of Wilmington, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Friday at Roane Cemetery in Clayton.

The family requests memorial donations be made to Hospice of Yancey County, 856 Georges Fork Road, Burnsville, NC 28714.
