Thurston Eugene “Gene” Wilbanks Jr., 48, of Tiger, died Wednesday morning, May 21, 2014, at Mountain Lakes Medical Center.

Gene was born Sept. 16, 1965, in Greenville, South Carolina, the son of the late Thurston and Beth Justus Wilbanks, Sr. He was employed by the county of Rabun for a long period of time. He was a member of Battle Branch Baptist Church.

He is survived by: his wife, Barbara Cook Wilbanks of Tiger; a daughter, Ashley Lynette Wilbanks of Clayton; three stepdaughters, Darleen Buchanan of Westminster, S.C., and Nanette Ragusin and Tabitha Aylesworth, both of Melbourne, Fla.; a sister, Angela Kerry Wilbanks Waldron of Clayton; a brother, Peter Kelly Wilbanks of Clayton; a grandson, Kaleb Michael Queen, five stepgrandchildren, Michael Shane Powers, Matthew Powers, Devon Ragusin, Annie Wilborn and Wesley Buchanan; and two great-grandchildren.

The body was cremated, and a memorial service was held May 22 at Battle Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Madison McCrackin officiating.
