Larry Keith Darnell, 63 years old, passed away on Friday, May 22, 2020, at Athens Regional Hospital. Family members were with him until the Angels took him home. While he will be sorely missed, we are looking forward to being reunited with him one day.He is survived by his daughter, Misty Michelle Smith, and two grandchildren, Andrew and Annika Smith; 2 sisters, Kathy and husband, Dale George, of Lexington, Georgia, and Robin and husband, William Duncan, of Lakeland, Florida; 2 nieces and 3 nephews; as well as many cousins, friends, and neighbors. Larry was preceded in death by his infant son, Coty, and his parents, Keith and Bernice Darnell.

He graduated from Rabun County High School in 1975. Soon afterwards he married Ellen Copeland, and later they were blessed with their precious daughter, Misty. Most of his career was spent working for Taylor Construction in Atlanta, Georgia, where he was one of the best heavy equipment operators of his time. While working in Atlanta, Larry had the privilege of working with Alan Jackson (before his singing career), and they often shot pool together after work.

Larry’s favorite hobbies were fishing, and making jokes. He loved to watch football and baseball on TV. He also watched TV game shows: Jeopardy, Family Feud, and Wheel of Fortune. He watched Andy Griffith every day, quoting the episodes, word for word.

A Memorial and Celebration of Larry’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Sept. 26, 2020 at Warwoman Dell Park, in Clayton, Ga. We will share stories, remember the good times that we had with Larry, and spread his ashes in the place that he loved most, his beloved Clayton, Georgia mountains.
