RABUN GAP— The exact cause and nature of a Rabun Gap fire is under investigation after two people were airlifted following severe burns on Wednesday, Sept. 4.

Rabun County Emergency Medical Services and Rabun County Fire Services were dispatched at 8:12 p.m. on a call initially reporting two patients who had been burned from a fire caused by an open gas can and a lit cigarette, according to a press release from Rabun County Fire Services.

The Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner’s Office is investigating the incident and reported that the burn victims were injured from a fire that occurred while inside of a camper.
