‘Tis the season where local shops are bustling with activity as people search for that perfect holiday gift.
But it’s also a time of the year where scams are on the rise.
Lt. Mark Gerrells with the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office recently spoke to the Rotary Club of Clayton and gave advice to the community about how to spot a scam and what to do to keep from being the victim of a scam.
“This is the time of year where there are a lot of scams going on,” Gerrells said.
Because this is the time of year where people are buying more packages than usual, “porch pirates” might scope out when the next delivery arrives at your house and snatch it.
Gerrells said it’s a good idea to have wireless cameras set up strategically at the house so the homeowner can monitor when they are away.
Gerrells said people should also be careful of who they have working at the home and making sure everything is secure. He added that it’s also important to be mindful of what information is left around.
“Be careful of the information you leave inside your car as well,” Gerrells said.
Receipts and other documents can expose a lot of personal information. He also mentioned taking the GPS location of your home out of your car. He said if someone stole the vehicle and your home location is in it, they could easily get to your home.
Many people receive scam emails as well about accounts or payment information needing updated.
Gerrells said when you get an email, do not click on an email address if you are unfamiliar with it.
He said if the email advises you to click the link to update information, do not click the link. Instead go to the legitimate website and check account information that way.
Gerrells said it’s also important to never give out personal information over the phone.
