A notice from Mountain City Mayor Grace Watts calls all residents of Mountain City to express their opinions about a discontinuance feasibility study being conducted by the United States Postal Service (USPS) on the proposed permanent closing of the Mountain City Post Office.
Watts encourages citizens to stop by Mountain City’s City Hall, located at 41 Education Street, call the city clerk at 706-746-3513 or call the court clerk at 706-746-2621 to let their voices be heard by Friday, Sept. 4, according to a display advertisement from the City of Mountain City published in The Clayton Tribune.
Letters can also be mailed to PO Box 493, Mountain City, Ga. 30562.
“The Mountain City Post Office was placed under emergency suspension due to the lease being terminated by our lessor, and there are no suitable alternate quarters available,” according to a “Memorandum for Mountain City, Ga. 30562 Postal Customers” posted at the Rabun Gap Post Office. “Since the suspension, postal products and services have been available at Rabun Gap Post Office located at 5664 Highway 441 N, Rabun Gap, Ga., 30568.”
The Mountain City Post Office was suspended at the close of business on Feb. 28, 2023. The suspension was due to the non-renewal of a lease at the property where the Mountain City Post Office is housed, according to previous reporting by The Clayton Tribune.
The memorandum states that the permanent closing of the Mountain City Post Office will not result in any changes to services currently being offered at the Rabun Gap Post Office.
“Our valued Post Office (PO) Box customers will continue to receive their mail at the Rabun Gap Post Office. If a decision is ultimately made to permanently close the Mountain City Post Office, the customer status of those with P.O. Boxes, as well as other customers, simply changes from temporary to permanent in our system, and customer P.O. Box numbers and ZIP Codes remain the same,” according to the USPS memorandum.
Retail hours at the Rabun Gap Post Office are Monday-Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a closure for lunch from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday hours are 7:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
