SKY VALLEY – The City of Sky Valley is planning a full day of events on July 2 to celebrate our nation’s independence. Mayor Hollie Steil is promising a bigger and better celebration than in years past.
“We have been planning for the better part of a year and are promising a tremendous Saturday of events on July 2,” Steil said. “In addition to our expanded fireworks show at dark, we have events throughout the day for residents, guests, locals and visitors. All are welcome to any and all of our events.”
The day begins at 8 a.m. with the Sky Valley Property Owners Pancake Breakfast. The breakfast lasts until 10 a.m. at the Sky Valley Country Club Pavilion and features sausage, eggs, biscuits, gravy, pancakes, grits and coffee and orange juice at a cost of $10 for adults and $5 for children.
Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. for the Sky Valley Rubber Duck Race at Mud Creek along Sky Valley Way. The race will begin when all 500 ducks are in the water. This event is free to children and prizes will be awarded to the fastest swimming ducks.
At 11:15 a.m., the Sky Valley Grand Parade begins at Tahoe Lane and ends at the Sky Valley Park. “Most local businesses and organizations and individuals will be entering “floats” in our hometown USA parade,” Steil said. Prizes will be awarded for Best Parade entries. “Our Grandstand Master of Ceremony will announce the parade entries as they come by the reviewing stand,” Steil said. “If your organization or business would like to participate, please call our City Clerk to register. All entries should be at Tahoe Lane by 10:45 a.m. on July 2.”
At the conclusion of the parade, the Sky Valley/Scaly Mountain Fire Department will be cooking up the Hot Dog Café. Hot dogs and water will be provided free of charge at the Sky Valley Pavilion.
At 5:30 p.m. the annual Sid Weber Memorial Cancer Fund Barbeque Dinner begins with pulled pork, chicken, beans, coleslaw, bun and a cookie. The BBQ dinners can be picked up at the Sky Valley Country Club Pavilion before 8 p.m. The dinner is a takeout-only event and tickets ($16 for adults and $8 for children) must be purchased in advance. Tickets can be purchased at the Sky Valley Country Club Pro Shop, Sky Valley Timeshares Office, Poss Realty Sky Valley, Reeves in Dillard and sidwebercancerfund.org. Get your tickets early because this BBQ sells out every year. All proceeds benefit cancer patients here in Rabun County.
“At approximately 9:30 p.m. is the event everyone has been waiting for,” Steil said. “Commercial grade fireworks will be exploding over the lake. The spectacular show will begin at dark and hundreds of people are expected. Please bring your lawn chairs.”
