It was raining cats and dogs in Rabun County over the weekend as motorists were met with torrential downpours during the Labor Day holiday.
The Germany Valley Weather Station reported 6.15 inches of total rainfall through the holiday weekend, according to Anthony Lampros, National Weather Service co-op station observer.
Increased traffic and heavy rain caused flooding and congested traffic throughout the county as visitors came to town to participate in Labor Day events.
Rabun County 911 issued CodeRED alerts about flooding that occurred along several creeks and rivers. Some roads were under water, especially in the south end of the county.
“Use extreme caution when driving and do not drive through standing water,” the CodeRED alerts advised.
Rabun County EMA/Search and Rescue posted a statement that roads impacted included Ramey Road; Crow Creek; W. Wolf Creek; Joe Jones; Joy Bridge; River Falls Campground; Rickman Airfield and Shady Lane.
Locals documented on social media flooding in several areas including Joy Bridge; Tallulah Falls Shortline Trail; Warwoman Creek; Earl’s Ford; and Lakemont.
Georgia Power also lowered one gate on Mathis Dam at Lake Rabun due to flooding.
