Rabun County EMS
The man who died after possibly being struck by lightning at a Mountain City residence July 2 has been identified as Felipe Flores, 39, of Gainesville, according to Rabun County Coroner Sam Beck.
Flores is at GBI waiting for autopsy.
On Saturday, July 2 at approximately 3:35 p.m., Rabun County E-911 received a report of a male subject in his 30s who had possibly been struck by lightning at a residence on Black's Creek Drive in Mountain City, according to a statement from Brian Panell, Rabun County EMA director.
"Upon arrival to the scene, crews reported a male subject in his 30s down on the ground, unconscious and unresponsive, beside a contracting van with bystanders doing CPR. Crews reported a hole in the driveway approximately 6-8 inches from the subject's feet that appeared to be a possible lightning strike," according to Panell.
Rabun County EMS transported the subject in critical condition to Mountain Lakes Medical Center in Clayton.
"Subsequently, the subject has succumbed from the injuries sustained in this incident," according to the statement.
The man was taken to the State Medical Examiners Office to determine the final cause of death. The name is being withheld due to it being an open Coroner case.
