Stations 1,5 and 12 were dispatched to the fire at 8:32 a.m. and were advised that all occupants were out of the house, according to a press release from Rabun County Fire Services.
"Rabun County EMS arrived [on scene] at 8:36 a.m. and found an approximate 1,000 sq. ft. wood frame structure on a basement with fire showing through the ridge of the roof. Engine 1 arrived and deployed two attack lines to the seat of the fire. The fire was brought under control at 9:02 a.m. and units remained on scene until 10:35 a.m. checking for hotspots," according to the press release.
Approximately 3,000 gallons of water were used to extinguish the fire, according to the statement.
According to the statement, the occupant advised fire officials that he had a fire in the wood stove the night before and smelled smoke after waking the morning of October 19.
"When he entered the living room area, there were flames coming from the walls on both sides of the chimney. He evacuated and called 911," according to the press release.
"The fire appeared to be unintentional in nature. The house sustained heavy fire damage to half of it with the other half sustaining smoke and water damage," the statement detailed.
Rabun County Fire Services reminds everyone to have your gas and wood-fired appliances checked annually prior to using them and to have working smoke alarms on each floor of your residence, according to the statement.
