SKY VALLEY– With the main entrance to the Sky Valley Country Club still temporarily closed to repair of a large culvert, motorists have opted for another entrance and exit into a majority of the town.
“The road will be closed intermittently until further notice,” said Sky Valley Police Chief Vaughn Estes. He said travelers will have to pass through an alternate route in the Heatherstone community to get through.
“Sky Valley has only one entrance and exit into the majority portion of our city. This main roadway must pass over a large culvert,” said Sky Valley Mayor Hollie Steil. “This culvert floods on a regular basis and the roadway becomes impassable. This culvert was installed in the 1970s and has deteriorated. Emergency services cannot get to our citizens when the roadway is flooded.”
Steil said the repair of the culvert is long overdue and grant funding was secured to help pay for the majority of the repair.
“The construction of the new culvert is underway and should be up and ready for incoming traffic very soon,” Steil said.
The repairs for the culvert began last week.
The cost for the culvert replacement is $109,492.16, said City Manager Jason Streetman. He said it is being funded with $79,658.46 in GDOT LMIG/EEE grants which requires a 30 percent match of $23,897.54 plus $7,811 in Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) funds earmarked for road maintenance. This totals $111,367 to complete the project.
