TIGER-- Rabun County Schools will be hosting an in-person three-week summer school in June, Board of Education members discussed at their meeting last Thursday.

“We decided to hold a summer school program this year because we are dedicated to helping our students who have fallen behind due to situations related to the current COVID pandemic,” said Assistant Superintendent Kelly McKay in a statement Monday.

“We want our students to begin the 2021-2022 school year as near to being on grade level as possible.  We believe in order to accomplish this goal, summer school must be provided to those who have fallen behind.”

Invitations will be sent to parents of eligible students by the school. Students will be invited to attend based on academic need.

These students who are invited to attend will be strongly encouraged to participate, but they will not be required, McKay explained.

“Summer school will focus on helping students recover losses in achievement that have occurred during the pandemic,” McKay said. “Our program will be strictly based on need to ensure we are able to focus our instruction on our students who have fallen behind.”

Transportation and meals will be provided to all attendees.

The program will run like a typical school day from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday-Thursday for a three-week period in June, McKay explained.

“Class sizes will be kept small with two adults per 15 kids in grades Pre-K-6 so that we can individualize the instruction to be targeted to each child’s deficits,” McKay said.
