Despite the rain, Celebrate Clayton proved to be a successful event as crowds flocked to check out a variety of artists last weekend.
The event was sponsored by the North Georgia Arts Guild.
“All of the exhibitors seemed to be really happy,” said Kathy Ford, Celebrate Clayton chairperson, about how the event went.
She said that with the rain Saturday, exhibitors could use their own discretion about whether to open for business.
Ford said that some businesses opened on Saturday afternoon after the rain subsided.
Exhibitors selling everything from artwork to pottery to wooden creations were featured in the event. Musical performances from different groups were held at the Rock House on the corner of Main St.
T-shirts were sold and proceeds went toward scholarships for Rabun County High School students.
Exhibitors were given awards voted by a panel of judges.
Carolyn Simmons received the Producer’s Award.
Ford said that this award is selected by the North Georgia Arts Guild.
Mike Wilson won Best in Show for making his knives.
Wendy Converse and Michael Mason each received a Judge’s award.
Kim Adams, a judge for the contest, said that voting is based on the artist’s entire body of work and how it is displayed.
Adams said judges look for “work that is cohesive” and “mastery in the media.”
Ford thanked the Clayton Police Department for their help during the event.
“They showed up when we needed them, even though we didn’t know we needed them,” Ford said.
She said that they helped clear the street Friday evening and it made the process go smoother.
