CLAYTON-- The Rabun County Board of Commissioners approved a bid from the Rabun Gap business Pittman Construction to resurface 8.5 miles of road in the county, at their meeting last Tuesday.
Pittman Construction was the lowest bidder in the amount of $1,459,201.50. Commissioners considered four bids.
The resurfacing is part of annual maintenance in the county.
The roads chosen to resurface are:
3.5 miles on Warwoman
1.9 miles on Lake Rabun Rd.
1.5 miles on Seed Tick Rd.
1.6 miles on Betty’s Creek Rd.
“They’re evaluated by the road department and the bids are put out for commissioners to look at,” said County Administrator Darrin Giles about how the roads are decided. He said that the road department prioritizes the areas that need maintenanced the most.
He said that the project moves forward once it is approved by commissioners.
Giles said that resurfacing on these roads will begin in the near future. He said that there are a couple of culverts that need to be replaced on some of the roads before the project can begin.
A culvert is a structure that allows water to flow under a road, railroad, trail or similar obstruction from one side to another.
The resurfacing is calculated at a cost of $171, 670.76 per mile, based on the bid amount.
