Rabun County native Joey Davenport is starting the summer with a successful and thriving garden. Here (right), he holds a cabbage that’s ahead of the patch by weighing in at 7 pounds. He currently is growing vegetables, including several types of peppers also pictured here. Other vegetables include broccoli and sweet potatoes in his garden, located on the east side of Clayton. He also has a patch of fully grown garlic in his garden, along with red potatoes and tomatoes planted. Davenport has been gardening for over 70 years and shares the garden with his daughter, Jennifer Davenport. He was raised in the Persimmon area and shares memories of his time gardening, especially potatoes, while growing up. In the past, Davenport’s garden has produced a tomato weighing two pounds and an 8-pound cabbage.
