Mother of 8-year-old killed in accident Wednesday dies Saturday morning

The mother involved in an accident Wednesday that killed an 8-year-old boy at Highway 76 W and Charlie Mountain Rd. in Clayton died Saturday morning, confirmed Rabun County Coroner Sam Beck, Saturday.

Gretchen Echols, 41, of Clayton died at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville after being transported there following the accident and treated in the ICU for severe injuries. 

Two others were injured in the accident. 

Echols was traveling west on U.S. Highway 76 W when she lost control of a 2014 Ford Taurus and crossed into the oncoming path of a 2018 Ford F150. The pickup, driven by Clyde Martin, 68, of Clayton, struck the Taurus in the passenger side rear door, according to a statement from Georgia State Patrol.

The GSP said 8-year-old Ian Echols, of Clayton, died from injuries sustained in the crash. Another passenger, Xavier Ankrom, 9, of Clayton, was transported to the hospital via personal vehicle and then transported to the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Urgent Care.

Martin was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center and has minor injuries.

Georgia State Patrol Post 7, Toccoa, was requested at 3:40 p.m. Wednesday to investigate the crash.
