Motorists traveling both directions on Highway 441 in Dillard on Thursday, Nov. 6, should expect delays starting in the early afternoon while the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) sets new bridge beams for Betty’s Creek Bridge.
Traffic in both directions is scheduled to be stopped temporarily.
Beam setting operations are scheduled to begin at approximately noon, according to a press release from GDOT.
The bridge is located on Highway 441 (Ga. 15) at the cross-street of Henry Dillard Street, crossing Betty’s Creek, in Dillard, according to Nathan Johnston, district 1 communications officer for GDOT.
The work is part of GDOT’s ongoing project to widen Highway 441 (Ga. 15). Part of the project includes the construction of a new bridge over Betty’s Creek to enhance safety and mobility, according to GDOT officials.
“Motorists traveling through the area should expect delays during this work. Trucks delivering the beams will park on the existing bridge for unloading. For safety, traffic in both northbound and southbound lanes will be temporarily stopped while each beam is unloaded and set in place,” according to GDOT’s press release. “Once each beam is secured and clear of the roadway, traffic will resume in both directions. Flaggers will be present to direct drivers and motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time and remain alert in the work zone.”
Motorists traveling southbound can bypass the area by taking Franklin Street to Yorkhouse Road and those traveling northbound can bypass the area by taking Kelly’s Creek Road in Rabun Gap.
Thursday’s construction work is part of a larger improvement project to widen Highway 441 (Ga. 15) from north of Kelly’s Creek Road to the North Carolina state line, according to the press release.
“The corridor will be expanded to four lanes with a raised 20-foot median extending north to the City of Dillard, transitioning to a four-lane section with a flush median through the city limits,” according to the press release.
“Georgia DOT appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as this important infrastructure improvement continues,” according to GDOT officials.
