Edith Bleckley Burney, native of Rabun Gap, Georgia passed away peacefully on her 88th birthday, Dec. 9th, 2019. Born in 1931 to Samuel and Adeline Coe Bleckley, she graduated from Rabun Gap Nacoochee School and then went on to earn multiple degrees culminating in a doctorate in Early Childhood Education from the New Orleans Baptist Seminary.
Alongside her husband, Dr. Robert S. Burney, she served at the Nigerian Baptist Theological Seminary in Ogbomosho, Nigeria through the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention for 30 years. After retiring from the mission field, they continued to be active in missions, religious education, and church outreach.
Predeceased by her husband, Bob, Edith is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Burney Hamilton (Libbi) and son-in-law, Robert Hamilton of Newberg, Oregon, her son, Robert Bleckley Burney (Bobby) and daughter-in-law, Kimberley Goh-Burney, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and three granddaughters, Laura Beth, Savannah, and Emily Hamilton. Edith also leaves behind a loving extended family of many cousins as well as her Nigerian missionary family.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, Dec. 15, at the Head of Tennessee Baptist Church, Dillard, Ga.., with Rev. Gabe Southards and Rev. Don Copeland and others officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her memory to the International Mission Board or Operation Christmas Child. The Family is at the home.
