Stekoa Creek Park work showcases natural vegetation and rain garden

Clayton's hidden treasure

CLAYTON— Nestled behind Georgia Mountain Market off of Highway 441 is a 4-acre recreation area filled with rare plants, wildflowers, magnolias and native vegetation that sits along a creek and is perfect for walking or sharing lunch under the pavilion.

And you pass it every day while driving through Clayton.

Stekoa Creek Park is located next to Stekoa Creek, which is a main tributary of the National Wild and Scenic Chattooga River, according to park information on a sign at the park entrance.

It was constructed jointly between the city of Clayton and the Chattooga Conservancy, a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and enhancing the environment and cultural heritage of the Chattooga River watershed.

“A lot of people don’t know it’s here,” said Buzz Williams, program associate for Chattooga Conservancy, as he gave a tour of the park.
