Memorial Day festivities coming this weekend

Rabun County will be filled with many events this weekend in honor of Memorial Day Monday, May 29.

On Sunday, May 28, Lake Rabun Association will present scholarships to students at Rabun County High School and Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School beginning at 10 a.m. at the Lake Rabun Pavilion.

The Fourth Annual Lake Burton Civic Association (LBCA) Vintage Wooden Boat Parade and Show will set sail on Lake Burton Sunday, May 28. The parade starts at 11 a.m. when the boats leave from Timpson Cove. It is led by the Burton One Fire Boat. The parade will travel to LaPrade’s Marina, located at 25 Shoreline Trail, Clarkesville, where they will be moored at the boat dock there around noon and will be displayed until 2 p.m. for the public to view. Community members will even get opportunities to converse with wooden boat owners.

This year’s event is expected to have more than 30 boats participating. Boats in the parade were built between 1930 and 1970 and will feature several such as a 1953 Chris-Craft; 1937 Seabird Triple Cockpit; 1957 Century Coronado; 1922 Chris-Craft; 1930 Atlas; 1948 Chris-Craft Deluxe Runabout; 1956 Chris-Craft Continental; 1957 Chris-Craft Capri; a 1939 Chris-Craft; and a 1939 Chris-Craft Sportsman.

Also on Sunday, May 28, The Dillard House will host Memorial Day festivities filled with food, music and community fun. Enjoy delicious Dillard House BBQ and live entertainment provided by Hunter Grayson. Live entertainment on the Rock House lawn is from 5-8 p.m. and the BBQ menu is served from 5:30-8 p.m. The menu includes fried chicken; BBQ ribs; BBQ chopped pork; all beef hotdogs; hamburgers; potato salad; three cheese tortellini pasta; homemade coleslaw; calico salad; broccoli salad; caesar salad; roasted vegetables; baked beans; french fries; brunswick stew; mac-and-cheese; corn on the cob; sliced watermelon; and an assorted dessert buffet. There will also be a condiment and topping tray with tomatoes, onions, cheese, buns and bread, and butter pickles. A cash bar will be available. The cost is $34.95 for adults; $21.95 for young adults ages 12-16; $17.95 for children ages 4-11; and children 3 and under are free.

Hunter Grayson was born and raised in Athens, Ga. He grew up listening to country classics with his mother, and Motown and soul with his father.
