School Resource Officers receive active shooter training

TIGER— Rabun County School Resource Officers (SROs) from the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office are ready to keep children safe during the new school year after training with Lt. Mark Gerrells on techniques used in the Heightened Emergency Response Officer (HERO) program.

“It’s a school officer assigned to the single task of dealing with active shooters or events dealing with violence,” Gerrells said in a July interview with The Clayton Tribune.

The HERO program was started by Shawn Wilson, chief deputy of the Banks County Sheriff’s Office, and is being implemented in Banks County.

Although Rabun County Schools does not currently have a HERO program, Gerrells said that he is training SROs on how to respond to active shooter situations.

“I’m more than pleased with these guys,” Gerrells said about the SROs training.  Gerrells administered their training for the HERO program.

He said that the training is very physical and intense.
