TIGER — In the final set of Match 1, Rabun County’s first-year volleyball coach Reggie Rider called a timeout and asked his team for seven straight points. The Wildcats obliged, defeating the Prince Avenue Christian Wolverines 2-1 (25-21, 19-25, 15-11), before forcing a third set against the East Hall Vikings in a 2-1 (18-25, 25-23, 15-7) loss at Ken Byrd Court on Tuesday night. “We have to learn to finish,’” Rider said during the timeout against the Wolverines. “We’ve learned to play, now we have to learn to finish.”

Rabun Gap volleyball, baseball get new head coaches

The Rabun Gap-Nacoochee varsity volleyball and baseball programs will have new head coaches this season. Courtney Ledford will coach the volleyball team and Clark Wright will coach the baseball team. Ledford is a 2008 Rabun Gap graduate, playing 7 years of volleyball at Rabun Gap and was a team captain. She played setter and libero.

TFS adds new head coaches to athletic programs

New leadership is in place at Tallulah Falls School for varsity boys basketball, varsity girls soccer and middle school/varsity swim programs.  Varsity boys basketball:  Cody Coleman, upper school history teacher, will lead the TFS varsity boys basketball team.  “Coach Coleman is invested in this group of young men with his work in the classroom and by serving last season as an assistant coach and as the interim coach this spring and summer,” said President and Head of School Larry A. Peevy. “His strong enthusiasm for building leaders through sports is evident.”

Rabun cheerleaders earn top cheer team honor

The Rabun County varsity cheerleaders were recognized as the best cheer team at a Universal Cheerleaders Association camp in Lander University in Greenwood, S.C., last week. Rabun had five cheerleaders be named All-Americans, earned after individual tryouts. Willow Fisher, Jaycee Weber, Maci Varnadoe, Miya Stewart and Kasten Weems were invited to cheer at the New Year’s Day parade in London.

FCA brings Florida baseball players to Rabun

SKY VALLEY — Fellowship of Christian Athletes leaders Jason Schack and Jason Arnold wanted to give their group of Florida high school baseball players a chance to get away, while getting closer to their faith. Twenty-five student-athletes from Brevard County, Fla., took in a little bit of everything Rabun County and the surrounding area had to offer during their five-day retreat last week. “This is at the end of a summer where they’ve been investing spiritually. We’ve been praying with these kids, teaching them the word and we wanted to get them to a place where they could retreat,” Schack said.

Pupils become teachers at Rabun’s Future Wildcats Camp

TIGER — The students became the teachers at Rabun County’s annual Future Wildcats Football Camp this week. The players who were once in the shoes of elementary-age student-athletes helped varsity coaches teach football fundamentals and played two-hand touch at the two-day camp at the team’s practice field Monday and Tuesday night.
