Sentences handed down in burglary, RICO cases

CLAYTON-- A couple known locally as Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus for their work with children at Christmas came home one day in September 2019 to find their house burglarized, ransacked and left all but inhabitable. Trash and human waste were strewn all over the house and property.

City disputes April water bill

CLAYTON-- Clayton City Council members discussed a dispute with a $26,000 April water bill from the Rabun County Water and Sewer Authority (RCWSA) at Tuesday’s council work session.  City officials said an initial $85,000 water bill from the RCWSA for the month of April was paid.

Rabun Habitat for Humanity cuts ribbon on new home for couple

TIGER-- Habitat for Humanity of Rabun County held a ribbon cutting and house blessing for the 2020 Habitat Home for recipients Allison McFalls and Daniel Nicholson last Saturday.  The home is located on Idlywild Dr. in Tiger and attendees got an opportunity to tour the inside of the home.

A Georgia State Patrol vehicle was struck by a vehicle that first struck an embankment following a maneuver by GSP to stop a suspect after he fled from a traffic stop on Ga. 15 near Lofty Branch Rd. in Rabun County Monday morning. The suspect was pursued by GSP before crashing his vehicle and fleeing the scene on foot.

Man drowns in river after fleeing police

TALLULAH FALLS-- The body of a man who fled police following a traffic stop was located submerged in the Tallulah River Monday after the suspect fled a traffic stop on Ga. 15 near Lofty Branch Rd. in Rabun County by Georgia State Patrol (GSP) earlier that morning.

Rain fails to dampen spirits at RCHS graduation

TIGER-- A torrential downpour of rain and threats of lightning strikes couldn’t stop the Rabun County High School Class of 2021 from graduating last Friday.

New Rabun library manager is hooked on books

CLAYTON-- Whether you are a bookworm who loves action, adventure, mysteries or romance novels, Dyana Costello Banks has a recommendation for you.  Costello Banks is the new library manager at the Rabun County Public Library.  “I want to be able to be in the stacks,” Costello Banks said.

LAKE BURTON-- Memorial Day weekend brought crowds of people to Rabun County and many people flocked to Lake Burton on Sunday to watch wooden boats set sail for the annual Wooden Boat Parade.  It was sponsored by the Lake Burton Civic Association.

Local mental health needs studied

CLAYTON-- Community leaders came together last week to discuss the need for mental health care resources in Rabun County.  The Mental Health Task Force of Rabun County held a meeting at the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia Teaching Kitchen last Wednesday.

The RCSO partnered with Safe Kids Rabun County for the event. Scott was one of five deputies who became certified as a Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST).

The Rabun County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) and Safe Kids Rabun County sponsored a car seat inspection event last month where nationally certified technicians helped citizens properly install car seats and booster seats.  The event was held at the Walmart in Clayton, 1455 Highway 441 S, Clayton.

Mountain City fire ruled arson

A fire that occurred at 354 Electric Ave., Mountain City on May 24 has been ruled arson, according to the Georgia Office of Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire, in a statement.  The 80-year-old, 1,000 sq. ft. residence was in the process of being renovated, according to the statement.
